Golf Travels with Tom & Jan

Mt. Washington Valley, New Hampshire by Jan Martin

July 27, 2010

With the built-in GPS there is no more “who thinks they know the way” orWashington Valleygetting lost. So in a little more than four hours from Cape Cod, we arrived in New Hampshire. We knew instantly that we had crossed the state line when we saw a character out of Easy Rider with the bandana rather than a helmet. Since we were early for check-in at the White Mountain Hotel, we stopped for lunch at the Chinook Café, Rte. 16, Conway. Very interesting menu; while Tom ordered chili and a salad, I really enjoyed my warm spinach and beet salad with artichokes and feta cheese. Just as we were served, a wedding party of three arrived on their racing bicycles with helmets. The bride had a veil attached to her helmet and a blue garter belt around her spandex biking shorts while both the groom and best man wore tuxedo tee shirts. Of course one would see this in the state whose license plate reads “ Live Free or Die.”

Golf Tips

Tips from Bill Richmond

July 29, 2010

I still can’t believe I’m 70 years old, but my swing speed confirms it. So what do I do to give myself the best chance on the golf course? First of all, I choose my clubs carefully.

CLUBS: 1. I had my driver built for me. It has one inch of extra length. It has a small head, about the same size as the wooden heads I used to use. It has a graphite shaft to fit my swing speed. A word about huge headed drivers- they don’t make the ball go further, they have bigger sweet spots to guard against mishits.

2. I carry a 3-metal with a hollowed-out sole plate to make it easier to get out of the rough. It has the same shaft as my driver.

3. #2 and #4 Ben Hogan hybrids. I have the #2 instead of a 5-metal for low shots because it is usually windy on Cape Cod. Hybrids are definitely easier to hit than long irons. If you haven’t tried them yet, do it now. I have a friend in his late 70’s who has all hybrids and he loves them.

4. #5 through 9 Ben Hogan irons with graphite shafts fit to my swing. I got one of the last sets before Callaway stopped putting the care and energy into the Hogan name. They’re special.

5. Pitching, Gap, Sand and Lob wedges. My sand wedge is a Wilson because I like the bounce, the others are Hogan. Why do I carry so many? Well, what are your scoring clubs?

6. Good old 1950s Bullseye putter. I hope you find an old friend that feels as good as this one does.
